Claudia Fragapane, four times Commonwealth Gold medallist in gymnastics officially opened the new NHS Blood and Transplant specialist unit offering life saving and life enhancing therapies for West Country patients with rare blood disorders.
The Therapeutic Apheresis Services (TAS) based in University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is one of only six NHSBT units of its kind in England.
The unit provides various specialist treatments which all rely on a technique called Apheresis. This is a process where the patient or donors blood is removed and then specific blood components or other substances are separated out using a machine.
The cutting edge treatments provide life-saving treatments and regular courses of therapy. The unit can treat patients with unusual medical conditions like Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia Purpura and Sickle Cell Anaemia.
